Prioritization and Procrastination

Prioritization refers to that process of classifying our goals and tasks, in order to be productive and get things done. The classical way to prioritize what you have to do is ABC system: A – very important, B – important, C – less important.

Procrastination denotes the human act of postponing or delaying a task. It presents many causes and rationalizations, from distractions, lack of motivation, perfectionism and laziness to fear of success or failure. It seems that animals don’t procrastinate.

Procrastination of Prioritization

There are three situations: First is that when we don’t prioritize our activities and actions at all. We tackle each task as and when it comes. Second situation is that when we efficiently prioritize what we have to do. And finally third situation when we procrastinate to prioritize our goals and tasks because there are (or we always find) so many things to do that we feel overwhelmed (this is a point where procrastination begins to install).

Non-Prioritization lead to Procrastination

The fact of not prioritizing our goals and acts make us to postpone many important things. This happens because all we have to do come in our mind at the same time. If we didn’t classify them in order of importance, all we can do is just to pick one. Usually we pick the easiest and pleasant, not important one.

Failing to Prioritize lead to Procrastination

Many times the reason we procrastinate our tasks isn’t the fact that we don’t prioritize but that we fail to prioritize. Ortega y Gasset defined life as something that gives us a lot of tasks. In his vision, life don’t invite you to relax, meditate or rest (even these are “thing to do”) but to do more and more.

In our busy world we have so many things to do that we reach a point when we can’t say any more which task is more important than others. Failing to prioritize, we remain with two options: do things as they come, but this may burn you out if there are too many and you may miss important things; or procrastinate.

How to escape the prioritization doubt

  • Make sure that your criterion is clear, criterion by which you decide which things are very important and which not.
  • Relay on your values as the supervisor criterion in the process of prioritizing. Clarifying what you value most will help you prioritize efficiently your tasks.
  • Lower the voice of your analytical mind and trust your intuition. Usually when it comes to prioritize we relay only on our logical mind but rarely stop and listen what our sensitive, intuitive part is saying. It will help you focus on what you like to do and not only on what you have to do.
  • Take time to relax and meditate, this will help you clarify your mission and goals.

All very true. I definitely tend to “overthink” problems. Doesn’t work too well. Don’t you think patience is good sometimes, though? If you follow your instincts, which is good, they often don’t speak up right away. (Found you on ProBlogger.)
